Description
The International Philatelic Federation, i.e. Fédération Internationale de Philatélie (FIP) was founded in Paris on June 18, 1926. The association was created at the initiative of a group of European philatelic societies, who came together during the International Philatelic Exhibition in Paris and agreed to create a global umbrella organization for philatelists. From an organization that consisted of only a few European societies a hundred years ago, the International Philatelic Federation ˗ FIP has developed into a global network of more than 90 national philatelic societies and is today the supreme authority for defining standards in modern philately.
The headquarters of this organization are in Zurich, and the main goals of the FIP are the advancement of philately and stamp collecting, the development of friendly relations between nations, and cooperation with postal administrations. The FIP plays a special role in the development of exhibition activities, through the granting of patronage and recognition to international exhibitions, as well as through the work of specialized commissions covering various areas of philately.
World exhibitions are held under the auspices of the FIP, as the highest level of philatelic competition, the status and standards of which are determined by the FIP, defining the criteria for evaluating exhibits.
Based on the belief that postage stamps are “little ambassadors” of countries, the FIP positions philately as a lasting cultural value and a means of connecting nations and cultures. Union of Philatelists of Serbia, as a full member, actively participates in the work of the FIP and is present on the international exhibition scene.
