Description
The Archives of Vojvodina was founded in 1926 as the State Archives in Novi Sad. Since 1989, the headquarters of the Archives have been placed in an adapted building of the former remand prison, built at the beginning of the 20th century according to the project of the architect Đula Vagner. The building was declared a cultural monument in 2007.
Dr. Dimitrije Kirilović (1894–1956) was the first archivist of the State Archives in Novi Sad from 1926 to 1932, and then its director from 1932 to 1941. With his dedicated work, he laid the foundations of an organized archival service and made a decisive contribution to the institutional development of archival activity, the systematic collection and protection of materials, as well as the formation of the original archival fund.
Today, the Archives of Vojvodina operates as a public institution, responsible for the protection of archival materials and documentary material created through the work of provincial authorities, institutions, organizations and prominent individuals in the area of today's AP Vojvodina. The materials kept in the Archives cover the period from the time of the Habsburg Monarchy to the modern era and represent authentic testimony to the political, socio-economic and cultural-historical circumstances in which its creators operated, and are used for public law, private law and scientific research purposes.
Motifs on the issue: fragment of a breviary on parchment (12th–13th century); Metropolitan Stefan Stratimirović announcing the appointment of Josif Rajačić as Bishop of Vrsac (1833); Letter of gratitude from Patriarch Arsenij III Crnojević to the Austrian Emperor Leopold I for the mercy shown to the refugee Serbian people (1690); The Sretenje Order of the First Degree, awarded to the Archives of Vojvodina on the occasion of its one hundred years of work, for special services to the Republic of Serbia and its citizens in preserving cultural and historical heritage.
