Description
For almost a century and a half, relations between Serbia and the United States have been built on mutual respect, cooperation, and a shared ideal of freedom. This year, as we celebrate 145 years since the establishment of official diplomatic relations, we commemorate the pillars on which our relationship was built. In the year when we also mark the 250th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence, this is an opportunity to recall our common, centuries-old struggle for freedom, as a value that our peoples especially cherish.
The same spirit from Philadelphia and Boston was present in Orašac and Takovo. All this time, the ideal of freedom inspired our soldiers to fight side by side for a better world, our scientists to enlighten and connect that world, our businessmen to enrich it, and our artists to make it more beautiful and noble.
Hoping that in the future we will be even more firmly bound in our common aspirations, we celebrate this important anniversary and remember the personalities, ideas, and places that symbolize our struggles for freedom.
President Woodrow Wilson ordered the Serbian flag to be raised above the White House on July 28, 1918, at the initiative of his friend Mihajlo Pupin. This was just one of many gestures of solidarity by Americans with the Serbian people during World War I, in which we fought side by side.
